Animal Pound from Walton Heath, Surrey

animal pound

Near the smithy we have re-erected this simple fenced enclosure in which animals found straying on Walton Heath were impounded until claimed by their owners. The administration of animal pounds was a manorial function, and fines were paid by owners for retrieval of their animals. Generally, unclaimed strays became the property of the lord of the manor after a certain period of time, often twelve months.
